Home Sweet Home Review House of Horrors PS4 PSVR

As he explores his surroundings, Tim quickly realizes that he has left the world of logic and reason behind, as he soon finds himself pursued through a nightmare landscape by vengeful spirits. To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera are required to experience these features.

Unfortunately, most solutions will be to find an item that grants access to a path and move to the next complication. Home Sweet Home is pretty linear and most doors, stairways, and windows will be inaccessible to Tim. You’ll always have a clear picture on what your surroundings are in any given level, but some of the puzzles are not very clear. "Home Sweet Home is a solid modern horror game which effectively utilizes Thai culture and mythology to create an unnerving, atmospheric, and surreal experience." Current PS4 Games

Since I was aware of its upcoming release on the PlayStation 4, I’ve been intrigued by Home Sweet Home. I consider myself a fan of “Asian horror,” with plenty of films and comics under my belt, most of them hailing from Japan and Korea. So my interest was immediately piqued when I learned of this game, which draws its horror from the mythology of Thailand. I was ready for some cool scares and a peek through a window at some new cultural imagery I wasn’t familiar with. While what I ended up with was definitely creepy and had its moments of thrilling, intense horror, it was often held back by rough gameplay snags that would turn big moments into drags.

It wasn't an ending at all frankly, the game just stopped when it was about to get it's ending. I had to complete the game without VR cuz of constant crashes and it felt so much better but still bad game. While Home Sweet Home doesn't bring anything new to the table for first person horror puzzlers, it does stand out with the inclusion of Thai horror folklore which is truly terrifying. It's let down with a couple of bugs but it's not a bad way to spend a few hours.

The image also does a poor job of overtaking the PSVR’s screens, meaning it often felt like I was looking through some sort of grimy film the whole time. Playing Home Sweet Home in its normal mode is definitely the way to go. While the moment to moment gameplay of Home Sweet Home might feel clumsy and barebones at times, the scares in this game cannot be denied. I would tell you to play with the lights out, but in VR, it simply doesn’t matter. The lights are always out in Home Sweet Home, and what you can’t see may kill you. Tim must sneak and hide to survive, as lingering for even a moment in the gaze of a spirit will lead to a swift and jarring death.

Home Sweet Home uses VR’s ability to represent scale in some impressive ways, with one Preta in particular that looms over the player, towering impossibly into the sky. After one level that I had meticulously explored, I was shocked to see that I had only found three of eighteen collectable items. While I thought that I had been picking my way slowly through the environments for clues, I was clearly looking in the wrong places.

To make a comparison,Home Sweet Home reminds me ofAlien Isolation somewhat, but a much more truncated version that highlights its issues more as the player doesn’t get room to breathe and get absorbed into the fiction. The game takes the time to explain the lore that comes into play through environmental storytelling. Of particular interest and importance is the legend of the haunting “Preta”, a restless and vengeful spirit that is forever hungry and thirsty. The entire game is steeped in Thai imagery, from the newspaper clippings to the graffiti on the walls, and the unique setting adds to the sense of displacement and disorientation for western players.

An intriguing horror experience with some neat ideas, but it doesn’t seem to have the muscle to make those ideas work as well as they could. As she constantly slides the box cutter up and down, the noise reverberates throughout the area and put a chill in my spine every time. Doors will randomly close or open when you pass by them, items will move subtly in a dark room, and even a giant frickin’ Attack on Titan wannabe will smash the house suddenly. "Home Sweet Home is one of the most intense PlayStation VR compatible horror games released to date, and it’s ready to take you on an experience you’ll never forget."

Very little is interactive, and what is interactive is immediately relevant. This includes your path, the problem of the moment, and of course your tools to deal with the threat. This is not an impressive game from a visual fidelity or content volume standpoint, but where it does excel is its sound design.

Sure, the dogs that crash through the windows in Resident Evil made me jump, and I was somewhat unsettled the first time that I witnessed Pyramid Head abusing his mannequin friends in Silent Hill 2. But as a medium, the interactivity of gaming has always served to create an invisible wall between the screen and my emotions. Software subject to license (us.playstation.com/softwarelicense). While its atmosphere and especially sound design are high quality and quite effective at creeping you out, I more often found myself ripped back out of the experience, disappointed in the moment, and wanting more. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how important sound is to a horror experience. In games especially, so much is communicated through sound, from your emotional state being manipulated through music, to being able to gauge your surroundings, to all the “fun” stuff. In this case, after playing Home Sweet Home, the sound of a box cutter’s blade protracting and retracting might stick with you for a long time. Especially since that sound is tied not only to the central threat, but also all the dying and continuing you’re going to be doing. The first big scare in Home Sweet Home also sets the stage for its first big frustration.

It is this is dynamic that allows Home Sweet Home to turn the screws of suspense, taking players’ breath away with heart-stopping sequences and wicked jump-scares. When you are hiding in a locker, peering through the slots as some awful presence stalks about the room moaning for your blood, it is easy to forget that this is “just a game”. I found myself literally holding my breath, desperate to not be discovered by the awful chittering spirit that was searching for me. Each of Home Sweet Home’s malevolent spirits also has a distinct and disturbing audio cue designed to have players darting for the nearest locker, drain, or over-sized vase as soon as they hear them.

Ultimately Home Sweet Home is an intriguing horror experience with some neat ideas, but it doesn’t seem to have the muscle to make those ideas work as well as they could. It’s a short, concise experience, but it’s often interrupted by frustrating trial and error challenges that interrupt the flow with frequent checkpoint loading and rewatching cutscenes. VR mode also feels half-baked, is uncomfortable to play at times, and makes those challenging moments even more cumbersome to deal with.

Beneath the promising concept, Home Sweet Home is as generic and bare bones as it gets for horror titles on PlayStation 4. Playing it with PSVR might be a game-changer, but without it, expect a mediocre and pedestrian first-person adventure. With only a few cheap jump-scares and some clever space twisting, this is only for people who are desperate for some scares. However, half the time there will be an imminent threat to Tim’s life in the areas you need to search who may or may not have some dodgy A.I. This makes certain encounters a little frustrating and left me exasperated when trying to find a solution a few times.

There were moments in Home Sweet Home, the Yggdrazil Group’s horror title that was recently ported to the PlayStation VR, that frightened me so badly that I actually had to take off my headgear to collect myself. If you doubt your sailing experience, please send us your sailing resume and a member of our team will review it and get back to you within 24 hours. First 90 minutes of fun but after the Red Eye section it becomes a boring game of cat and mouse, pointless repetition of key collection and dreadful stealth mechanic.

The sounds, ambiance, creature designs, and the mystery in which Tim finds himself were certainly well crafted. What’s more are the collectibles you can pick up on your journey. Most will be incredibly easy to find, but that may have been the point. They paint a picture of sanity lost and people completely losing their minds in similar situations.
